PROJECT DETAILS

The Holden Block at 1027 W. Madison St. is a four-story commercial loft building built in 1872. It is designed in the Italianate architectural style, faced with Buena Vista sandstone, and ornamented with a plethora of finely-crafted stone ornament concentrated around upper-floor windows. Brent Widler, AIA (Widler Architecture) was contracted to perform the design. Adam Rohrbaugh then took his design and detailed, waterproofed, and developed the drawings to build a functional, waterproofing and storefront design. Chicago has great variations in weather and building. Due to the extremes in Chicago weather, Mr. Rohrbaugh integrated new waterproofing systems into the old masonry, concrete and steel components, maintained the integrity of the new systems, protected the historic components, and tied the two together successfully.

 

Result: One of the few remaining 1870s commercial loft buildings on Chicago’s Near West Side — the Holden Block — has been saved and brought back to its historic splendor thanks to its recent [2011] designation as a local Chicago landmark. It is now on the historic register.
